Delirious Facade is a web application design project that uses image processing artificial intelligence as a generator for architectural form and ornament. The process can best be understood as the architectural equivalent of the popular "Face Swap" smart phone application; in this case, two images of building elevations will compose a third hybrid, blending architectural styles and features across time, material, and context.
The project creates a data set by first cataloging various types of existing elevations and uses these visual signatures or patterns as the material for the generation of hybrid facades. By re-purposing Google's DeepDream algorithm, we can task artificial intelligence with the dialectical operation of seeing one facade in the image of another, hallucinating a new elevation. The resulting proposals are inherently contextual, and relate to historical precedent but do so in ways that are not tied down to dominant formal narratives. Instead, these experiments initiate new material and compositional strategies for architectural facade design.
